A Study Of The Theme Of Panopticism And Jeremy Benthams, Michael Foucaults Ideas In Panopticon By Jenni Fagan And 1984 By George Orwell

A Study Of The Theme Of Panopticism And Jeremy Bentham's, Michael Foucault's Ideas In Panopticon By Jenni Fagan And 1984 By George Orwell A panopticon can be used in order to effectively keep surveillance of society. This, in all of its senses, is manipulative and coercive. As society started growing, it kept getting more difficult to control the people, and therefore, other resources or mechanisms had to be used for the monitoring of these people. In the late eighteenth century, Jeremy Bentham had an architectural design for prisons, asylums, schools, hospitals, and factories, and received help from an architect in order to put his ideas on paper . Michael Foucault, a French philosopher, did extensive research on panopticons and his ideas were taken into consideration by future authors. Bentham’s plan for the prison design gained popularity because Foucault saw it as a strategic model to internalize discipline and authority. The Panopticon, written by British young adult author Jenni Fagan, is directly linked to these ideas. 1984 by George Orwell, however, was published in 1949, so it cannot be said that Foucau lt influenced it, since the panopticist ideas were published in Discipline and Punish: The Birth of a Prison (1975). On the other hand, Bentham could have slightly influenced Orwell’s writings. These panopticist ideas come into play in today’s world as well, and it has become a controversial topic because of modern technology that society feels has become more and more invasive. The Panopticon and 1984 both have the recurring theme of panopticism, which affect the main characters in different manners. This paper aims to show the correlation between Bentham, Foucault, and how the same ideas and theories influenced works that were written decades apart. The ideas of a panopticon originally had good intentions; Jeremy Bentham created it in order to retire violent methods of punishment. He wanted to punish in another form, this being more psychological. Foucault stated that the panopticon â€Å"reverses the principle of the dungeon†. The dungeon had â€Å"three functions: to enclose, to deprive of light, and to hide; it (the panopticon) preserves only the first and eliminated the other two† . Knowledge comes from power, and the panopticon can allow the authorities to see everything that is going on around them, leading them to know more things. The panopticon also creates a constant state of control, and makes those that are observed internalize the fact that they are always watched. â€Å"Constant observation acted as a control mechanism; a consciousness of constant surveillance is internalized†. The Panopticon, as the title states, revolves around the idea that people are always being watched. Anais feels as if she is involved in an experiment, and she knows that people are always watching her, and wants to escape it. It’s a novel that goes in depth into the main character’s psyche, and the reader gets an insight into her life and fears. She’s strong, but copes with drugs and her own imagination. Ironically, these are the things that should not be done when one knows that they are under vigilance. For Anais to escape the experiment and cope with her uncertainty of where she comes from, she seeks comfort by playing the â€Å"birthday game†. By creating a life for herself, she is able to rely on those facts and pretend that she has a semi-normal life. On the other hand, it is a sign of resistance from the panopticon, because people can see her actions, but not her thoughts. Since the novel is written from her perspective, the readers do get to see h er thoughts, so the readers act as the panopticon in this case. Anais is very skeptical of all that goes around her, and has been forced to grow up quickly. In the Panopticon that she lives in, the watch tower gives no privacy, which is an act against human rights. Being in a constant state of surveillance drives Anais mad, which in the end pushes her to escape her life. She was able to run away because the watch tower shattered, â€Å"the whole surveillance window shatters, and I see them; turning on their fucking tails; the experiment, for a fraction of a fucking second: exposed† . At this point, Anais is liberated and can start her life in Paris, just like she had decided with her birthday game. The last sentence of the novel is, â€Å"I begin today† . Because the windows hiding the faces of those surveilling her have shattered, they are now at her level because they are real people. She has the power to run away and fight the system, and therefore, becomes her own person. Orwell’s novel is dystopian and reflects the society as powerless and robotic. Big Brother in this case is the panopticon. There is no face to Big Brother, but society fears him. By using these scare tactics they have been able to brainwash society into being permanently scared. They have to be in constant control of what they say or do because the consequences are brutal. It is impossible to trust anybody, because when Winston did, he was turned into the police. Orwell also introduces â€Å"Newspeak† into the novel, which would now be considered simple English. It is the official language of Oceania. Because the words are so simple and there is no complexity to them, it gives people no reason to rethink words or give other definitions to them. It limits their language so they cannot rebel against the system, which is the main reason behind changing the language. Apart from limiting language, it also limits personality and personal identity, which is also a method of br ainwashing. Newspeak does not allow for any type of personal development, and Winston breaks this by keeping a diary. He is able to express his feelings in it, but realizes he has written â€Å"DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER† multiple times on the page and sees that he has committed thoughtcrime. If the level of intelligence of this society were higher, one might have realized that it would be impossible to track all the thoughts of all the members of society, but because of the various methods of brainwashing that have been carried out, no one was able to think it through. â€Å"Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you† . Fear is the most common tactic used by oppressive societies to stay in power. If society fears the system, one will rebel against it and the oppressive state continues. Winston is also guilty of doublethink, although he realizes he is. He works for the system, but secretly is rebelling against it. At the Ministry of Truth, slogans that read â€Å"WAR IS PEACE†, â€Å"FREEDOM IS SLAVERY†, and â€Å"IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH† all brainwash society. These words are antonyms of each other, and the people do not realize that. By working at the Ministry of Truth, he is supporting these statements, but by writing in his diary and being secretive he is rebelling against it. The difference between 1984 and The Panopticon is that the latter has partial freedom. Although Winston Smith is not a prisoner and works for the party, he has less freedom than Anais does. He has no freedom of any type, he cannot do, say, or think as he pleases, because the society is a microscope that is being observed by Big Brother. Anais, though she has been arrested and is a victim of countless foster homes and misfortune, is in a controlled environment but has the freedom to think, which is extremely powerful. As Foucault stated, knowledge is power. She can liberate herself of the constant pressure from the social workers and of the panopticist society she is in. There is no type of Thought Police or thoughtcrime like it exists in 1984. On the other hand, Anais is psychologically incarcerated at times, which is why she resorts to drugs. Although she has the freedom to think and create her past life, it stops her from really knowing who she is and where she comes from. However, her mind is so powerful that she can brainwash herself into creating a past life for herself. Winston, nevertheless, is very aware of what goes on in his life and that can give him a sense of security. Even though he is not following the rules, he knows his consequences. Because both novels share similar themes, the panopticist ideas appear throughout and the characters share common traits. Anais and Winston are very similar in the sense that they are both victims of their society. They are both incarcerated metaphorically. Their minds are free, but only one of them can be safe expressing their true thoughts and feelings. There is an internal struggle occurring with each, and although the characters are very different in terms of lifestyles and persona, their inner struggles clash. Being in a state of liminality like both characters are, they struggle with their daily lives and may or may not go against their basic beliefs, like Winston did when he turned in the love of his life, Julia. Anais differs in this manner, but as the novel progresses, there are signs of maturity on her part, and she becomes more conscious of her desires. The novels also share a major common aspect; the fact that both of the societal powers do not have a face to them. In 198 4, Big Brother does not have a face, so there is enough reason to believe that he does not exist, and that there is a group of people controlling society. Likewise, in The Panopticon, Anais does not see the faces of the people in the watch tower until the windows are shattered and she is able to see for a fraction of a second. Power does not come from one sole person; there is generally a group of people in control or a political figure who is puppeteered by others. A panopticist society currently exists among us, and although it may not be in the traditional sense, people definitely feel the effects of it. People are raised to believe that they are under constant watch of those that cannot be seen, for example Santa Claus for the young, or even more in depth, a God. A panopticon is essentially what God is, all watching and all knowing. In the end, people fear the consequences that God can give them, which is why many are so dedicated to their religion. This can make people feel anxious all the time and it is not fair to make people believe that they are not free because there is a radar on them at all times. It is psychologically damaging, because there is no true freedom. Currently, there have been happenings of government interference with the general public, not only terrorists or potential suspects. Wire-tapping goes against the American Constitution, and although the Patriot Act is named and worded in a way that makes it seem as if it is s omething that is a duty to ones country, it strips society of basic human rights. Under no circumstance is it okay to spy on one’s own, because it betrays trust between the government and members of society. One very current situation is the power behind Cuba’s dictator: Fidel Castro. There is no factual evidence that he is alive, but because â€Å"his people† say he is, Cubans believe it because they have been brainwashed to extreme extents by the communist party. Panopticons exist in all various forms, but the only way that society can fall into the trap is by succumbing to the power behind the words, because words are the most powerful thing when gaining power. Ignorance is not strength, and one should have the freedom to think freely and act within reason. Being under a constant state of vigilance like the characters of The Panopticon and 1984 were wears out ones mind and persona. Anais was able to break out of the cycle, but Winston on the other hand, fell back into the system and was brainwashed once again.

New Business Propsal Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

New Business Propsal - Research Paper Example This strategy will enable the company to easily capture the older Chinese people. In general, fruits are good for the health. Therefore, it is a good business strategy to develop a wide-range of combined fruit juices to enable the company attracts a large population of health conscious individuals living in China. Executive Summaries and Business Pro Forma Executive summaries and business pro formas is about studying the market demand and analyzing the actual cost of establishing a business (The City of Victoria, 2011). In general, drafting an executive summaries and business pro formas is important part of designing a business proposal since the process of going through the proposed business plan would give the business owner a better insight whether or not the proposed business idea is feasible or not. Specifically the population of China is one of the highest around the world. As of July 2010, the total population in China is a little more than 1.3 billion (Central Intelligence Ag ency, 2011a). Regardless of gender and sexual orientation, the target consumer for this product is between the age brackets of 15 – 64 years old is 72.1% of China’s entire population or close to 965 million individuals (ibid). Aside from having a very low unemployment rate with only 4.3% as of the last quarter of 2010, makes the idea to operate the business in China more feasible and lucrative as compared to doing the business in the United Kingdom (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011b). To make the proposed fruit-, tea-, and coffee-based smoothies reach the target consumers in China, I intend to penetrate the target consumers by initially renting out a small booth or stalls in different malls in Shanghai. In line with this, the top 10 malls in Shanghai China which I intend to establish a small booth or stalls include: Carrefour, No. 1 Department Store, Friendship Store, Grand Gateway Mall, Orient Department Store, Plaza 66, Shanghai Westgate Shopping Mall, Super Brand M all, Westgate Mall, and Yaxin Plaza (World Guides, 2011). Aside from making it easier for me to pull out the stalls in areas wherein the volume of target consumers who will be purchasing fruit-, tea-, and coffee-based smoothies is low, one of the reasons why it is necessary to start the business in a small-scale includes cheaper rental fees and lower manpower cost. By cutting down the daily operational cost in each mall, it is possible for me to take advantage of economies of scale and easily make the brand name be known to the public consumers. When managing the proposed business, it is very important on my part to reach the level higher than the break-even point. By reaching the break-even point, it means that I will not incur either business profit or loss. When computing for the break-even point, it is important to determine the variable and fixed operational expenses. Regardless of whether or not the total volume of sales is high, the fixed operational cost is referring to fix expenses which I should pay each month. On the other hand, variable costs include expenses which may accumulate depending on the demand for the proposed product. The minimum monthly wage in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin China is 1,120 yuan or 11 yuan per hour

Strategic Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words

Strategic Management - Essay Example Good leadership enhances the performance of the organization and vice versa. Thus in addition to developing their business plans effectively, the organizations are placing great emphasis on the leadership models that they adopt. Customer needs are currently very dynamic in nature. To address these in an effective manner, organizational leaders are equipping themselves with the relevant knowledge and skills. A host of critical information is sourced from market researches that are undertaken on a wide range. Based on these, the respective leaders are able to make informed decisions regarding the specific needs of the clients and how these can be met with ease. At this point, it cannot be disputed that customization of products is at the core of effective performance in the highly competitive market. Of great importance however is the role of strategic management. Seemingly, a significant percentage of the leaders are relying on organizational strategic plans to meet their goals. Usual ly, these are reflective of the short term as well as long term objectives of a given organization. Besides being based on market current market researches, organizational strategic plans are also greatly informed by the existing theoretical and conceptual models. Considering the fact that these are objective, they usually offer useful insights with respect to how an organization’s management strategy can help it in attaining and maintaining optimal performance. Ideally, organizational strategic plans need to be comprehensive and consistent with the mission and vision of the organization. They provide step wise processes that the organization employs in meeting its goals and objectives. It is against this background that this paper provides a critical evaluation of the Design school strategic management model. To enhance a harmonic consideration, it begins by underscoring the importance of strategic management models. It then proceeds to describing this particular model and t hen offers a detailed critique of its role in strategic management. General Discussion: The Role of Models in Strategic Management As indicated earlier, the corporate environment has changed dramatically the recent past. Not only has it increased in terms of complexity, but it has also increasingly become dynamic. This according to Chan and Renee (2005, p. 54) is attributable to a host of factors including globalization and the characteristic free movement of goods and information. This has in return compelled organizations to adopt approaches that can enable them to not only survive but to also thrive in the highly competitive environment. One of the approaches that most organizations have undertaken is to align their strategies to the objective provisions of the strategic management theories and models. Strategic management models have been tested over time and proven to be effective in guiding organizational performance. When applied accordingly, they can enable an organization t o face the modern challenges and address them with ease. Fundamentally, they contribute significantly to improved organizational performance. In his research, Alvesson (1996, p. 146) indicates that just like theories, models are abstract and do not contain content specific data or information. For this reason, they can be applied in different situations to resolve emergent organizational problems. Although they are not

Drink and Creative Writing Planning Essay Example for Free

Drink and Creative Writing Planning Essay Sometimes people choose to try things for the first time because they want to or they like trying new things or they are forced to. It was the day I was always waiting for, my first ever 9th grade party. I was so thrilled that the person even invited me, only the ‘cool’ people were invited to huge parties and well let’s just say I was an ordinary girl. My friend Adriana and got ready at my place with excitement and off we went to experience our one life opportunity with the popular groups. I walked in the big huge giant building I started to have goose bumps all over my body, my heart started to race as fast as a rocket, I was so nervous. It was all dark and the music was so loud my ears felt as if I was on a plane and about to take off. Everyone was dancing, drinking and doing all sorts of things I only thought happened in movies. I looked on my right and there was Adriana with some guy sitting on his lap and drinking, she moved quit fast. I went over to check if she was okay. She said she was but she sure didn’t look okay. I was already starting to regret coming to this party. I didn’t fit with these people, I was with all the ‘popular’ people but I still felt like an outcast. Sitting in the corner alone, then a loud voice crawled into my ear â€Å"Hey, what are you doing sitting down alone? Come with me! † I had never seen this girl in my life, or maybe I have but she was just covered by the heavy make-up. The strange girl handed me a drink, and told me to drink it, it’s nothing. Mum warned me about this, not taking drinks from random people. I hesitated and told the girl I don’t want the drink. But she kept implying that I should just take a little bit and I was in the middle of all her friends and I didn’t want to be humiliated. I took my first sip of alcohol and then I saw myself dancing and making a complete full of myself. The room started to spin uncontrollably. I don’t remember half of the things I even did; it was like I was a different person. I look to my right and I see two people fighting and Adriana in the middle. I was so worried she was in trouble so I headed over there to help her. I was pushed and shoved around trying to get to Adriana and all I remember is some aggressive boy picking up a bottle and I was on the floor. All I could see was a blurred vision of Adriana screaming my name and it all went blank. That night would have to be the worst night of my life. One single drop of alcohol changed my whole night. I regret every single decision I made that night. I wish I can take it all back. Who would’ve thought the impossible could be possible.

Explain the importance of business planning to the survival and growth

Explain the importance of business planning to the survival and growth of organisations. A business plan should always for a business start up, the use of the business plan should not stop there, and businesses should be planning constantly in order to run their business effectively and efficiently. Businesses have to think about how they are going to plan for survival or growth, therefore they need to do business planning, to help the business survive and to grow. Business planning means the stages the business would need to build up the business. Business planning is a written document which is used by various many types of people such as financial advisors such as banks, etc, it shows that the business has taken the time and discipline to think about where the business is and where the business wants to go. This is called a Business Plan. Business planning is essentially about taking a more in depth approach to thinking strategically about the future of the business whilst taking the businesses present situation into account, when planning Businesses think about two basic goals, it would be the description of the over view of the business idea and provide financial data, to show that the business is making good money for future developments, this record can be used in future to show financial institutions for example: if the business needs money for a new project in order to grow the business and goes to a bank for some finance, it means if the business can show that the business is doing well then the business will be eligible for this finance, it essentially allows the business to asses the businesses current situation so that they can plan for the future or make predictions as to what might happen, etc. Many Businesses invest in the time and energy into business planning for example by planning for a business it can save a lot of money. Should plans go wrong, where if it were planned business would have a back up plan to correct this situation, it automatically saves money and time. The most common reason is to obtain financial support from lenders to operate or expand the business for example in other cases where a business might be experiencing trading difficulties, business planning is a well process for any business undergoing significant changes for example if company wants to develop new products, new mark... ...prepared, the profit and loss and cash flow forecasts, These 2 documents help the business significantly and help the business to make decisions in order to grow and to survive. If the business needs to borrow money, and as a result will have a debt to service, the Profit and Loss forecast will show whether the business can afford to do this. If, as with the majority of start-ups, the business will run at a loss for a period of time, the P&L forecast will also indicate how long this is likely to be (based upon achieving the stated sales expectations) and at what point in its development the business will breakeven. Having drawn this up, if a P&L forecast shows that the new business is not likely to breakeven until month 20, Then at least the business will be in informed of there position and will judge the risk of committing the business life’s savings to the venture. Having prepared a business plan, which includes customer and market research, a sales forecast, a promotional strategy, a breakeven analysis and budgets and financial forecasts, there should then be indications as to how viable the business will be, and the likely returns on any investment made.

The Red Cardigan

The red Cardigan is about a young girl who claims to have a ‘gift’ where she knows things and see’s them before they happen. Evie, the young girl had the special gift passed down from her grandmother. The text explores the themes of psychological realism, crime mystery and the supernatural. This book was very detailed and interesting which kept me wanting to read more. The Red Cardigan is about Evie seeing things that others don’t. She likes to draw but sometimes her hands draw something completely different then what she was wanting to draw.Evie wears an opshop store red cardigan which used to belong to another girl who is now murdered and missing. Since she started wearing it she has been getting hints from that girl such as her hands drawing a picture of the missing girl, and all these hints eventually lead to a solved crime mystery. Evie first discovered her gift very young when she was in the car and every time she drove past a certain spot she would s ee a girl standing on the corner covered in blood. Later on she finds out that that was where a girl had been hit and killed. She was the only one who could see this though and didn’t understand at the time. Evie’s mum doesn’t approve of this gift and wants to have nothing to do with it so as Evie struggles to solve this crime she also battles with her mum and makes life very hard for her. The positive aspects of this text is that it is really interesting and has a really good and sthrong story line. This book is not confusing but very easy to understand what is happening and it has many details to help tell the story. The text is very organized and also has flashbacks tthroughout the text which help you understand and keep you interested and always thinking. We can see this when Evie experiences a flashback in the middle of the book of one of her dreams she had about a specific place, which didn’t make sense to her at the time, but now when she’s at that place, she realises what the dream was trying to tell her and it leads Evie to finding the missing girl. For me I don’t think that there are any negative aspects of this book as I loved every minute of it and could not find anything negative about it at all.The author deeply explores the themes of the supernatural and psychological sides of things which has made her being very successful in engaging her readers. J. C. Burke has done a very good job at making a great storyline and planning out the story so it works well and makes sense all tthroughout. The Red Cardigan written by J. C. Burke, is an interesting and touching story about a young girl who has a special gift and is on a mission to find a missing person. It explores psychological realism down to every little detail and keeps you intrigued all tthroughout the book. The message of this story was to always follow your senses as it leads you the right way and J. C. Burke was successful in communicating this to her readers, as she shows us that by Evie following hers it lead her the right way and ends up solving a crime mystery. This book has a very powerful and interesting story and I would defiantly rate it highly.

Day of Yahweh Essay Example

Day of Yahweh Essay Example Day of Yahweh Essay Day of Yahweh Essay Josh Wilson Minor Prophets November 15, 2010 Dr. Joseph Cathey The Day of Yahweh The Day of Yahweh is the day that most people associate with a period of time or a certain day that will occur when God’s will and purpose for His world and for mankind will be fulfilled. Some people believe that the day of the Lord will be a longer period of time than a single day- a period of time when Christ will reign throughout the world before He cleanses heaven and earth in preparation for the eternal promise of all mankind. Other scholars believe the day of the Lord will be an instantaneous event when Christ returns to earth to redeem His faithful believers and send unbelievers to eternal damnation. We can find support and promises of this throughout the Bible. In summation according to Amos 5, the DOY (Day of Yahweh) will be a day of darkness like we have never experienced or are even able to fathom. For the first time people of the earth will experience God’s total, all powerful wrath. We will see that the things of this world that we have sought after that we consider to be necessities will be stripped from us and account for nothing. Our views of greatness such as fame, fortune, and our own personal images will be for nothing as God unleashes His wrath upon the people of the earth. â€Å"The New Testament calls it a day of â€Å"wrath,† a day of â€Å"visitation,† and the â€Å"great day of God Almighty† (Revelation 16:14) and refers to a still future fulfillment when God’s wrath is poured out on unbelieving Israel (Isaiah 22; Jeremiah 30:1-17; Joel 1-2; Amos 5; Zephaniah 1) and on the unbelieving world (Ezekiel 38–39; Zechariah 14)†. (Got Questions Ministries) Are people of the world ready for this day that is nearing? The Old Testament was prophesying the day as a day that is near and forth coming. In Isaiah 13:6 it says, â€Å"Wail, for the day of the LORD is near†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Just how long away is this day? Just glancing at the passage it appears that God wants the Israelites to go above and beyond what they are presently doing. The passage begins by warning them of their expectation of the DOY. Why does God warn against something that had been in some cases a positive thing for God’s people? Is God trying to end the encouraging feeling of the anticipation of the DOY by telling about the punishment that awaits them? The passage continues and says â€Å"it will be darkness, and not light† in verse 18. This is repeated again in verse 20, (â€Å"†¦Is it not very dark? †) Why does Amos repeat this? Also something to think about, for whom is it going to be dark? Is who â€Å"you†? At first glance it looks like the letter seems to be aimed at the house of Israel, which Amos repeats later on in verse 25. So, that does not leave much room for debate. In verse 19, the passage continues by giving an suggestive metaphor for what this â€Å"day† will be like (â€Å"fled from lion, and a bear met him†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ). We can conclude from this that this event is inescapable and so is God’s wrath, but after we experience this will there be relief? First, it is said that the Lord hates the various feast days and their assemblies and offerings that people are giving to the Lord in verse 21. The texts go on to talk about other practices which God detests including their music, worship and songs (v. 23). It does not look like there is much hope for the nation of Israel. Why is God so sickened by the acts of worship and praise that they are offering to Him? God offers some relief in verse 24. The tone changes and it looks like there is a solution for God’s people. Amos says â€Å"let justice roll down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream†¦. † The main question concerning this is what type of offerings were they giving to God and what was their intent? Intent seems to be very important to God here. Amos then questions the period of time they spent in the desert, and asks â€Å"did you offer Me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness for forty years..? † (v. 25). Whether this is rhetorical or a question requiring a response is something that needs to be examined. Then there is the mention of a number of idols or deities that the Israelites took comfort in while they were in the desert. There are various interpretations of verse 26. Also there are contrasting opinions as to whether the answer to the question is meant to be answered or if it is rhetorical. Whichever way you view the question, whatever they did it was displeasing to God. It appears that if they did perform the sacrificial rituals the problem was that the sacrifices were not directed towards God and if they did not offer sacrifices they were neglecting their duties. However, there is another possibility and that is to show that the desert sacrifices, as insufficient as they may have been, were more pleasing to God that the more magnificent sacrifices of the present. This would be more in concurrence with the later teachings of the New Testament (Mark 12:42). But in addition there are other possible alternatives especially that verse 25 and verse 26 put side by side each other to distinguish between the then and the now. Given these statements, one must ask what can one person ultimately say in conclusion about the meaning of Amos? The difference in the DOY according to Amos, we can conclude that Amos was not a â€Å"normal† prophet. Given the repetitiveness of â€Å"day† in the book of Amos it would seem fair to say he is an eschatological prophet. â€Å"For some of the prophets, this Day would be one of punishment for Israel alone; for others, the gentiles would be the target of the Lords wrath; for most, the judgment would come on Israel and gentiles alike. All prophets believed that this Day would lead to repentance and redemption† (Bacon, 2010). This was common in the Hebrew context, the prophet using a common reference (DOY) with dual significance. In this case, although many scholars debate it, it would seem that the DOY is a festival of some sort or other deity related festivals, but the ultimate significance was the fact that the real DOY would be something less than encouraging, if the people do not change their ways. The State as Policy Maker - Essay Example State powers were supposed to be given to the public authority to avoid superiority in the markets and also individualized and economic relations that had been made private (Alden 160-158). In 1960s and 1970s the key role of the state was to help making plans on how to divide and provide basic necessities. The idea was changed to a policy known as Structural Adjustments Lending (SAL). In other words SAL was meant to bring in ideas of freedom in the economy, have free markets, private sector projects and also throw away conditions meant to harm the economy of the state (Judd 1992). Public polices of any country are not totally shaped by the politics in the government but by the social policies brought forward by the global organizations like non-governmental agencies. The state was also supposed to play a part in social regulation and provision of basic needs. This was done by development of initiatives and programmes like World Health Organisation (WHO), International Labour Organization (ILO) and many others. Short answer& - Essay Example The American Government is also held responsible for the pathetic condition of the people of Iraq enabling worldwide sanctions against Iraq. Since the American people elected their leaders and supported their policies, they too were held responsible for the atrocities against the Islam world. The strong military presence of the United States in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which is the holiest Islamic centre was considered a provocation to the entire Islamic brethren. The American military comprised of American men and women and the leaders and their policies were endorsed by the American people so they too were considered offenders of Islam who were to be attacked and subdued. One of the key features of the anti- American sentiments prevalent in the Middle East is the American policies which have played a decisive role in the local politics of the region. The disintegration of the Ottoman Empire caused by the Europeans resulted in the loss of the only unifying force in the Middle East. The western powers began to exploit the countries of this region for their own benefit. An atmosphere of distrust was created when the contents of the Sykes- Picot Agreement was made public by the Russians. This agreement divided the Ottoman Empire between the two European nations and limited the scope for absolute Arab sovereignty to the Arabian Peninsula. The Balfour Declaration supporting the Zionist movement caused ill will. Along with these the League of Nations mandate virtually gave control of the Middle East to Britain and France. The western policies were unacceptable to the people of the region and fostered anti- Western sentiments. Andrew Bacevich is of the view that the American Ideology of National Security is flawed in the sense that they are delusional. Successive governments have undermined the limitations of power and have believed in the efficacy of military solutions for all problems. He defines the Ideology of National Security within the four
